Well, I just got through cleaning my DC17 yesterday and thought I would finally write a review on it for Amazon. I've owned the vac for 2 years and 5 months now, so I've had plenty of time to use the heck out of it. Still to this day, I am impressed with the unit's build quality, functionality and suction power. Like many other Dyson owners, I struggled to find a good vacuum that would last before purchasing my Dyson. I owned two Kenmore vacs, two Bissells, a Panasonic and a Dirt Devil before purchasing my DC17 back in Jan of '07. All vacuums I used before my Dyson would usually last about a year or so before finally giving out or losing 50% or more of their suction due to the motor being overwhelmed with dust, or the mechanics getting clogged.
The last vacuum before my Dyson was a $165.00 Bissell cyclonic with double HEPA filters. It was supposed to be one of the best vacs on the market, so I thought I would give it a try and finally replaced an ailing $200.00 Kenmore that only lasted a couple years. I took really good care of the Bissell and it worked great for about 8 months or so until the HEPA filters and the pre motor filters finally clogged to no end. I then found out that to order all the replacement filters I needed, it would cost me around $90.00!! This is less than a year after purchasing the unit brand new. I was very disappointed to say the least, especially since if you go by the unit's manual, you should replace all filters every six months or so to keep the machine operating at peak performance. I also noticed that an inordinate amount of dust had been building up in the mechanical bits of the unit and in the pre motor assembly. You could literally smell the dust when you used the unit. I regularly cleaned the unit and sucked out all the dust from inside the machine with another vacuum, so it wasn't due to lack of maintenance. I thought there had to be a better way and a better vacuum out there than this poor excuse of engineering.
I had many reservations about purchasing a Dyson at first, due to their high price and the fact that they were relatively new to the states. I got a 20% coupon from Linen's n Things and thought I would give Dyson a try. Upon unpacking my new shiny Dyson at home, I was immediately impressed with the build quality of the unit and all of its accessories. I really does look and feel like you would think a $600.00 vacuum would look and feel. The parts fit together perfectly, there are no sharp edges, each component seems overly-engineered for a vacuum and it has a very sturdy feel to it. After owning the unit for two and a half years now, I can say that my initial assessment was spot on. I have not had one single problem with the machine and it has performed brilliantly. You won't believe the dust this thing picks up!! I take very good care of it and clean the filter every three months or so and use a brush to clean out and dust the root cyclone assembly about 4 to 5 times per year to keep it operating at top performance. I inspect the belt, clean the sole plate assembly and the brush bar and wipe and dust the unit. It still performs today at the exact same level as it did when it was brand new. I am still impressed with its level of suction and build quality. I just can't say enough about my Dyson. As long as Dyson continues to make vacuums like my DC17, I will never buy another brand as long as I live. I also own a Dyson Root 6 Animal hand held and love it!!

Pros:
- Build quality
- 5-year warranty (Best in the business)
- Dyson customer support
- Suction power
- Accessories (price is very good too)
- Cleaning power
- Ease to clean and maintain
- Lifetime filters (no need to buy anything else)
- Excellent air filtration (I have horrible allergies)

Cons:
- Cumbersome to carry
- Wand hose a little stiff, even two plus years later

I bought a Dyson animal a couple of years ago. I'll start there. We are "Animal House"...with one large dog, 2 small dogs, and 2 cats. AND, because there are coyotes living behind our fence, the small dogs cannot go outside without us and the cats never do. So that's a lot of indoor animal time.

The day I brought the vaccum home I could not BELIEVE how often I had to change the canister..it sucked up things that other vacuums can't! As your carpet wears, loose fibers come undone and make it look frayed...this sucked up all those laying on the surface and beneath it so the carpet looked new again and, even harder to do...on our wood and stained concrete floors it picked up every spec of dust rather than sending it flying!!

Fast forward a year. Suddenly the "vacuum that never loses suction" did. But bear with me, there's still a reason why I gave it 5 stars...

I sent it to Sears for repair. They sent it back saying it was a clog, charged me 50 bucks, and when I tried it it still was not performing as it once did.

I called customer service and explained that dust seemed to be getting trapped on my filter too often and it wasn't sucking as well. She asked me when I purchased it then asked me about the positioning of a rubber thick "O" ring on the bottom of the grey part of the canister. We discovered that it had moved up a bit, no longer creating as good of suction. But here's the best part! She said they had improved the vaccum in the last year with a thicker more stable O ring and so she sent me an entire new middle part of my vaccum...FREE! And she threw in a new filter.

Lesson here is...if you buy a refurbished one, or even a new one, know that they continually look for improvements through the years via customer feedback. AND if you do have a problem, even if you have owned it for years, don't send it out for repairs. Call Dyson.

Now that my vaccuum is basically new again, it works like it...no, it works better than that. There simply is no vaccuum that I've had (and I owned a 1,500 one before) that ever worked this well or was as easy to use as far as attachments.

I'm a Dyson for life customer!

Do not purchase these products. I spent nearly $600 on this vacuum and it has been nothing but problems. Eventually, I tossed it. I've owned vacuums my entire life and I didn't realize the canister needed changing and within seconds the motor burnt-up. Most sweepers simply shut-down once they heat-up. I called Dyson and all information was documented, I was asked about the canister being full, I told the truth, and was told that my warranty doesn't cover the sweeper because I didn't follow the instruction and that the info. was documented in case I contacted Dyson in the future. I can't believe that a sweeper that costs this amount can be so easily destroyed without any bells or whistles alerting to the canister being full. Its hard to see inside the canister to begin with once it gets dusty.

Kids even love it they say it goes all by itself. The first time you empty the canister can be messy. I LOVE this vac!!!!!! Very happy with it. Used to have a wind tunnell. I filled the canister the first time using it with all the junk left behind from my previous vac and I had just vaccummed! Love it! I saved so much money by buying off Amazon vs. Target!

I paid nearly $500 for the "anamal" style vacuum about five years ago. The vacuum has tremendous suction and still does. However, the vacuum is falling apart because of the plastic material used in its construction. The vacuum is on its last leg because a handle used to lift the vacuum is cracking and will soon completely break. The price for a replacement part is $75 plus tax and shipping. That is about 20% of the cost of the original vacuum. Meanwhile my thirty year old budget-grade Hoover sits in the corner still operating and still intact.

If you can afford the price of a new plastic Dyson every few years, you will benefit from its superior suction and cleaning ability.

I am a dedicated Dyson fan. I bought my first Dyson in 2003 and used and abused it until it died a slow death. My husband and I used the poor thing like a Shop Vac when we remodeled our last home but it hung on for another year of abuse. Nearly everyone in my family owns a Dyson.

I purchased the Dyson DC17 Animal after a lot of research. My husband wanted me to purchase a cheapy and just "get by" until we could afford the Dyson. I decided to borrow a vacuum and save my money. We have two kids, a lot of dirt, and a Pug that sheds all over the carpet. I eventually bought the Dyson and it seriously impressed everyone. I vacuum regularly and our house appears to be clean. Obviously it wasn't as clean as it looked. I put the vacuum together and turned it on. The thing just about jumped out of my hands because the suction is amazing. In a few minutes I had filled the entire canister. Over a two day period I vacuumed the floor three times and filled the canister three times. I attempted a fourth pass with the vacuum but the floor was finally clean. The carpet feels so soft. Anything that can pick up Pug hair is a winner. My 11-year-old daughter just walked through the living room and said "Our carpet feels so soft. It feels like it did when we bought it." The Animal did great on our ceramic tile. I used the Animal on our rugs. The suction is so great that it was nearly impossible to vacuum my small, light-weight rugs. It did a fabulous job on my heavier, larger rugs.

Because I did a lot of research before purchasing the DC17 Animal, I knew it was nearly twice as heavy as many other vacuums (about 20 pounds). I don't have any stairs to vacuum so this isn't an issue. The cord is long and the wand is easy to use (just pull it out). I like having a clear cover over the brush bar. I picked something up that made a lot of noise and was able to simply turn off the vacuum and look through the clear cover at the brush bar. I didn't have to turn the vacuum over and search for the object. Another thing I like is the large canister. The hose is made out of a thin plastic material. The hose doesn't feel as sturdy as the one on my original Dyson (time will tell).

I don't recommend this vacuum if you live in a small home, have to vacuum multi-levels, and/or have shag carpeting. It is an expensive vacuum and I wouldn't have purchased it if I didn't have the Pug. I happen to like the looks of this model, but my last one was purple and red (yuck). This model comes with three extra heads, a cleaning solution kit, and three stored attachments. A lot of the expense is due to all of this excess equipment. Save yourself some money if you aren't going to use the extra heads or don't have room to store them. You can buy a bare model Dyson and save some cash. It is extremely hard to get parts for a Dyson. I've heard that refurbished Dyson's are good and have the same warranty. I purchased my Animal for $467 on sale at Sears.

My in-laws used the new Dyson Ball while staying with relatives and they really were impressed with it. They said it was light-weight, didn't take up much storage space, and cleaned well. I tried it out at the store but it wasn't for me. I didn't feel like I had as much control as I do with the regular model. Overall, I would purchase this vacuum again. I wanted a good brush bar with tons of suction and the Animal delivered it all.

I bought this item on a friend's recommendation. I'm so sorry I spent so much for it. Though it cleans my carpeted areas, it is so-so on area rugs and floors and the attachments are a nightmare. I tried it on the stairs today and battled the hose and attachment the entire time. Plus, the suction has only worked with the hose for a short time. Very disappointing.

Beater bar is a stiff as a steel brush. If you have anything but extremely short pile on your carpet this vacuum will destroy anything with medium to long nap. Dyson solution, turn of the beater bar - which is the same a no vacuum. Save your money, dyson service on their products is nonexistant. Buying a dyson was the worst decision I have made in years. Do not believe what the sales people tell you on dyson products.

It did clean well. But then it broke!!! It has now been broken for three months and I am still waiting for parts. The 'approved' store that I brought it to has TEN Dysons waiting for the brush bar to come in. I am third in line so who knows when I will get it back. Customer Service is not helpful at all, they keep telling be one to two weeks- obviously not the case. I would not recommend this produt if it is going to be your sole vacuum- Have a back up ready.

After 1.5 years, the design has not changed.
The hose completely came apart. It weighs a TON and has the DUMBEST, lousiest design ever.
1. cannot vacuum under furniture because it is so large,
2. the hardwood floor attachment pushes stuff around because the bristles block the suction
3. the hose and entire design are incredibly akward --to get suction the hose will bend and block air, thus you must often hold + unbend the hose while simultaneously vacuuming.
4. you will injure your back with the weight of this beast.
5. save your money, it breaks just like the cheaper brands, and the hose replacement is well over $100
6. So after 1.5 years of a broken back, you can have my piece of dirt for free and I'm going to buy a new cannister every year as they break all the time anyhow.
